Хотя несколько раз я срывался — и мне это выходило боком, но каждый раз мать, видная французская коммунистка, спасала. А я всегда, когда это было нужно, не клянясь в своей верности передовому учению (это уж слишком), заполнял стенгазеты в цехах, где работал, всякой несусветной чушью: до сей поры отмыться не могу. Мой осторожный язык обычно развязывался только при обсуждении изобразительного искусства, как говорили тогда... будто поэзия или балет, тем более его предки храмовые танцы, не изображают. Поэтому я был интересен лишь немногим людям, любящим живопись и скульптуру, — и это приносило мне удовольствие, тем более, что среди них были и женщины, интересующиеся импрессионистами, кубистами, сюрреалистами. Иногда, якобы попутно, я им рассказывал милый роман «Любовник леди Чаттерлей» или «Тропики рака». На интеллигентных женщин это действовало. А многие искренно хотели понять что, как и почему. Меня это забавляло, поскольку я за этими знаниями не гонялся, даже от них отбивался, а вот, пригодились. Но только гораздо позже я за многое поблагодарил мать... но уже после ее гибели, разумеется.
Я вспоминал этих инженеров только потому, что один из них во время перекура подошел ко мне и сказал, что на меня донес Грыжастый. Чем-то я ему насолил. Сомнений нет, есть свидетели, бумага, подпись. Вот тут-то небо и свалилось мне на голову. Адреналин во мне разбушевался куда сильнее, чем в любимых мною драках. Обуздать его сумело только жгучее любопытство. Как известно, месть есть блюдо, которое следует есть холодным. Но во мне не было жажды мести, даже наказание за измену, хотя оно было необходимым, интересовало меня меньше, чем ответ на вопрос: почему? Но чтобы получить ответ, нужен был разработанный план и его хладнокровное исполнение. Это было первое в моей жизни жесткое задание самому себе.
В нужном месте и в нужное время я бил Грыжастого так долго и болезненно, в основном ладонями, чтобы переломов не осталось, пока он не выложил мне урывками все сокровенное, будто я был инквизиторором... или чекистом на допросе. Стыдно вспоминать это, но тогда я чувствовал себя вправе так поступить. Наверное, чекисты тоже так думали, когда пытали и убивали... Мой допрос длился несколько часов.
Все им рассказанное потрясло меня до основ, раскололо основы, создало во мне новый фундамент. Как ни странно, это стало переломным моментом в моей жизни. Пока Грыжастый плакал и выплевывал слова, полные злобы ко мне, ужаса перед болью и вместе с тем здравого смысла, как оказалось, во мне образовался новый для меня постулат: буря в стакане воды не менее яростна, чем в океане. Страсти, бушующие в домохозяйке, когда она замахивается сковородой на мужа или любовника, – не уступают страстям Александра Македонского или Чингисхана, когда они пытаются создать мировую империю. Набоков, Кафка, Селин и Платонов стали для меня с того вечера понятнее и ближе, а остальные отдалились. Это можно назвать импрессионизмом в прозе.
Именно в это время интерес к человеку, столь странному и интересному созданию, оттеснил всю остальную природу, земную и космическую. После откровений Грыжастого мне твердо захотелось стать писателем, отрицающим существование героев, вообще все четкое и конкретное, в том числе пейзаж и портрет. Вероятно, в тот вечер я стал зрелым, перестал ясно видеть добро и зло, хотя трудно это утверждать. Каждый, кто служил в нашей армии или попал в тюрьму молодым, может меня понять. Полностью ощутить себя созданным, стать обладателем всей шкалы ценностей и недостатков своей культуры (даже если сам этого не понимаешь) может, так мне мнится, только человек, попавший на некоторое время не просто в самые отвратительные условия, он должен оказаться в мире, где ничего не смешано и не размыто (как в мирном сне на диване), где все ясно, четко и противоположно (как господа и рабы). А затем неизбежно должно прийти понимание, что эта четкость – потолок лживости жизни. Вероятнее всего, подобное мировоззрение – результат процесса, а не явления. Но иногда мне кажется, что именно в тот вечер я стал взрослым.
