Эстрадную певицу Аллу Пугачеву я никогда не видел и даже не знал о ее существовании до середины восьмидесятых годов, но с ее именем у меня связаны такие удивительные воспоминания, что я решил их описать.

Во время Афганской войны (1979–1989) я постоянно ездил в Индию, Пакистан и Афганистан, выполняя задания НТС. Среди них были постоянные попытки спасти как можно больше советских военнопленных. Однажды, это было в 1985–86 году, я находился на северном склоне горы Ношак, наивысшей точки Афганистана (восточный и южный склоны принадлежат Пакистану). Как мне сказали, в это место можно добраться только пешком, на осле или на муле. НТС на мула никогда бы не раскошелился, и не зря, на такие деньги можно было купить автомобиль, поэтому я сидел на старом ишаке Хотабыче, как я его назвал, сам не знаю почему.

В этом месте в ущельях, иногда довольно узких, были выдолблены еще в древности тропы и пещеры, удобные в партизанской войне еще тем, что наши самолеты не могли до них добраться ни ракетами, ни орудиями. Наши вертолеты не могли там выжить и десяти минут, о десанте в таких горах вообще говорить не стоит, поэтому афганские партизаны спокойно устраивали в этих пещерах склады, штаб, госпитали, провели электричество. Неподалеку находилась племенная зона между двумя странами, где можно было купить буквально все, что душе угодно, от оружия и наркотиков до золота и рабов, в том числе детей для гаремов. В этих пещерах я должен был встретиться с двумя нашими пленными, чтобы получить от них всю возможную информацию для последующего их освобождения. Я радовался: Канада согласилась предоставить им политическое убежище.

В течение предыдущих лет Запад делал все необходимое, чтобы мы теряли в Афганистане как можно больше людей. Продолжалась Холодная война (имя собственное), так что это стремление можно считать нормальным. Особенно если подсчитать, сколько английских, французских, израильских и американских военнослужащих погибли благодаря нашей помощи алжирским и палестинским повстанцам, коммунистам в Корее, Вьетнаме и Камбодже, в Анголе, Сомали, Эфиопии, многих длугих странах. Поэтому жесткая политика Запада была мне понятна, я бы иначе не поступил. Но, несмотря ни на что, своих ребят мне, служившему в СА, было ужасно жалко, ведь каждый из них мог быть моим сыном, племянником, сыном друга, сослуживца...

Каждый год войны я прочесывал в столице Пакистана все возможные консульства и посольства и обращался ко всем с просьбой дать хотя бы нескольким советским военнопленным политическое убежище, аргументируя тем, что они тоже жертвы войны. А между делом платил афганским моджахедам деньги только с одной целью: чтобы они наших пленных не убивали. По сути для спасения многих сотен пленных нам недоставало только согласия западных стран, поскольку член НТС Юрий Миллер с помощью своих дальних афганских родственников-пуштунов из рода Гайлани был принят президентом Пакистана Зия уль-Хаком. Этот генерал-президент-диктатор сказал ему, что ссориться с Москвой из-за этой чепухи он не собирается, но все же пойдет нам навстречу: предоставит освобожденным пленным возможность проехать инкогнито от афганской границы до аэропорта, но этим он и ограничится. Однако западные правительства отказывались предоставить выкупленным пленным политическое убежище... Деньги иссякали, пленных убивали, иногда у меня на глазах именно тогда, когда я просил командира еще подождать, и хорошо еще, когда их убивали быстро.
